Why We Built TruHue — And Why Nothing Else Like It Exists

There are hundreds of beauty apps. Shade finders, virtual try-ons, AI skin analyzers, product recommendation engines. So why did we build another one?

Because none of them do what we needed.

We wanted something simple: an app that could look at any makeup product — any brand, any store, any shade — and tell us whether it would actually look good based on our personal coloring. Not based on what's trending. Not based on what influencers are wearing. Just a clear, honest answer: is this shade right for me?

That app didn't exist. So we built it.

What's Out There — And What's Missing

Let's talk about what's already available, because we tried all of it before we started building.

Not sure which season you are?

Take the free color analysis quiz — 2 minutes, no email required. Then every product in this post gets scored for your palette.

Brand shade finders (like the ones from Sephora, MAC, or L'Oreal) only match you to products within their own brand. They're great if you're already committed to that brand — but they can't tell you whether a random drugstore lipstick you picked up at Target will work for you.

Virtual try-on tools let you see a shade on your face through your camera. But seeing it and knowing if it actually harmonizes with your coloring are two different things. A lipstick can look fine in a filter and still feel off in real life, because filters don't account for your undertone, depth, and clarity the way color analysis does.

AI skin analyzers focus on skin health — texture, moisture, concerns. They don't touch color harmony or seasonal palettes.

Quiz-based tools give you a "warm or cool" result and some general advice. But "warm or cool" is only the beginning. The difference between a Soft Autumn and a True Autumn is everything when you're choosing between two brown lipsticks.

TruHue is the only app that combines 12-season color analysis with real-time product scoring across every brand. No other app tells you YAY, OKAY, or NAY for any product, personalized to your exact season.

What TruHue Actually Does

When you open TruHue, the first thing we do is find your season. Not just "warm" or "cool" — one of 12 specific sub-seasons, each with its own palette of colors that make you glow.

Not sure of your season yet? Take the free color quiz — it takes about 2 minutes.

Then you can scan, search, or browse any product. TruHue evaluates three attributes of every shade — undertone, depth, and clarity — and scores it against your season profile. The result is one of three scores:

YAY — this shade was made for you. Wear it with confidence.
OKAY — wearable, but not your best. You could pull it off.
NAY — skip it. This one will wash you out or clash.

Every score comes with a confidence percentage and a plain-English explanation of why. Not just "bad match" — but specifically what attribute is off and how it affects the way the shade looks on you.

Why 12 Seasons Matters

Most color tools stop at four seasons: Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter. That's a start, but it's too broad. Within "Autumn" alone, there's Light Autumn, True Autumn, and Deep Autumn — and they wear completely different shades.

A warm caramel nude that's a YAY for Deep Autumn can be a NAY for Light Spring. A cool berry that works beautifully on True Winter can clash completely with Soft Summer. The 12-season system captures these differences, and TruHue is built on all 12.

That level of precision is what makes the difference between "this foundation looks okay, I guess" and "this is the one."

We're Not a Big Tech Company

TruHue wasn't built in a Silicon Valley office by a team of engineers who've never bought lipstick. It was built at a kitchen table in Oklahoma by a mom and her homeschooled daughter who love makeup and got tired of guessing.

We took color analysis classes. We learned the science. We taught ourselves to code. We hand-scored over 1,000 products shade by shade, season by season, to build the foundation of TruHue's database. Every scoring decision in the app traces back to real color theory — undertone, depth, and clarity — not a black-box algorithm.

This matters because when TruHue tells you a shade is a NAY, we can explain why. And when it says YAY, you can trust it.

What's Coming

TruHue is currently onboarding with the Apple App Store and Google Play. We're targeting an early April 2026 release. The core features — season analysis, product scanning, My Products database, Shop My Palette, and the Makeup Bag Audit — are all built and working.

We have so much more planned. But right now, we're focused on getting this into your hands so you can stop guessing and start glowing.
