Pantone’s Color of the Year: Does It Work for Your Season?

Pantone picked Cloud Dancer for 2026 and Mocha Mousse for 2025. We scored both against all 12 color seasons.

Every December, Pantone announces a Color of the Year that shapes product launches, fashion collections, and marketing campaigns for the next 12 months. In 2025 it was Mocha Mousse — a rich, warm brown. In 2026 it’s Cloud Dancer — a soft, luminous white.

Both colors are still showing up on shelves right now. But Pantone picks colors for cultural resonance, not for your skin tone. So let’s score them.

Cloud Dancer (2026): the cool, airy white

Cloud Dancer is PANTONE 11-4201 — a soft white with a barely-there cool undertone. In makeup, it shows up as: frosted white highlighter, white eyeliner (a TikTok trend), icy nail polish, and sheer pearl lip gloss. In fashion, it’s everywhere — linen, cotton, knitwear.

In color analysis terms, Cloud Dancer is cool, extremely light, and low chroma. That makes it a natural fit for light, cool seasons and a mismatch for deep, warm ones.

Light Summer

YAY

Cool and light — Cloud Dancer is essentially a palette color for you.

True Summer

YAY

The cool undertone aligns. Use it as highlighter or nail color.

True Winter

YAY

Icy white is a Winter staple. White eyeliner, frosted highlight — all YAY.

Bright Winter

OKAY

Wearable, but it’s subtle for your high contrast. Layer it with a bold lip.

SeasonVerdictWhy
Light SpringOKAYLight enough, but the cool undertone is slightly off. Ivory (warm white) is better.
Soft SummerOKAYWorks in small doses. As a full outfit, it’s too bright for your muted palette.
Soft AutumnOKAYCream or warm white is your version. Cloud Dancer’s cool cast reads slightly cold on you.
True SpringNAYCool white drains your warmth. Warm ivory or buttercream is your lane.
True AutumnNAYToo cool, too light. Cream, oatmeal, or camel replace white in your palette.
Deep AutumnNAYWhite overwhelms your depth. Off-white or bone works; pure white doesn’t.
Deep WinterOKAYStark contrast can work — but only if paired with dark colors. All-white looks washed out.

Mocha Mousse (2025): the warm, rich brown

Mocha Mousse is PANTONE 17-1230 — a warm, mid-depth brown with red-brown undertones. In makeup: espresso lip liner, warm brown eyeshadow, bronzer, nude-brown lip. In fashion: leather, suede, knitwear. It’s the latte makeup trend in Pantone form.

In color analysis terms, Mocha Mousse is warm, medium-deep, and moderate chroma. It’s an Autumn color through and through.

True Autumn

YAY

This is literally your palette. Warm, earthy, mid-depth brown = True Autumn DNA.

Deep Autumn

YAY

Rich and warm. Go slightly deeper for your best version — dark chocolate over milk chocolate.

Soft Autumn

YAY

The mutedness of Mocha Mousse fits your soft warmth. Dusty cocoa, muted espresso — all work.

True Spring

OKAY

Warm enough, but slightly muted for your brightness. A warmer, clearer brown is better.

SeasonVerdictWhy
Deep WinterOKAYThe depth works, but the warmth is slightly off. Dark cool-brown (espresso) is better.
Bright SpringOKAYWearable but muted. You need a warmer, brighter brown.
Light SpringNAYToo deep for your palette. Honey or warm beige is your brown.
True WinterNAYWarm brown muddies your clarity. Cool charcoal-brown or black-brown instead.
True SummerNAYToo warm and too saturated. Rose-brown or dusty mauve is your version.
Light SummerNAYToo deep, too warm. Soft taupe or cool greige is where you live.
Soft SummerOKAYClose — but the warmth pushes slightly past your comfort zone. Muted cocoa with a cool cast works.

The TruHue take: Pantone’s Color of the Year is a cultural signal, not a personal prescription. Cloud Dancer works for cool, light palettes. Mocha Mousse works for warm, earthy palettes. If neither is your season, don’t force it — just find your version of the same mood. "Airy and calm" exists in every palette. "Rich and grounded" exists in every palette. The color just changes.

Side by side: two years, two opposite colors

It’s striking how different these picks are. Mocha Mousse (2025) was warm, deep, and grounding. Cloud Dancer (2026) is cool, light, and ethereal. Together they represent the full spectrum of the warm-cool axis in color analysis.

If you’re warm-toned, Mocha Mousse products are still everywhere on shelves — the "latte makeup" trend keeps them in rotation. If you’re cool-toned, Cloud Dancer aligns with the cool-tone comeback of 2026. Either way, your season tells you which one is yours.
