MLBB, measured: what "one shade deeper than your lips" actually means

Quick Answer

"One or two shades deeper than your natural lip" is unactionable advice because nobody defines a shade. Measured in lightness on a 0-to-1 scale, an MLBB liner sits roughly 0.05 to 0.10 below your natural lip value. Find your natural lip depth, take the band at or just under it, then let your colour season choose between the cool and warm version. Depth first, undertone second — getting depth wrong is what makes a lip look like makeup.

Why the standard advice fails

Every brand guide and magazine gives the same instruction: go one or two shades deeper than your natural lip. It sounds precise. It isn't. A shade is not a unit, no two brands agree on one, and the advice never says deeper in what direction — browner, redder, or simply darker.

The naming makes it worse. Here is what happens when you take every lip liner in the catalog with a measured swatch value and group by the word on the packaging.

Shade nameProductsDistinct hex valuesBrandsLightness range
nude6160200.20 – 0.81

spice1717110.39 – 0.65
berry1414130.08 – 0.69
cocoa111170.22 – 0.52

The third column is the problem. Products sold under the same one-word name span dozens of genuinely different colours, and the lightness column shows those ranges overlapping almost completely. You cannot buy a "nude" liner and know what you are getting.

The terms, defined

MLBB. "My lips but better." A lip product close enough to your natural lip colour that it reads as your own mouth rather than as makeup. Defined against your lips, not against your skin — which is what separates it from a nude.

Lightness. How light or dark a colour is on a scale from 0 (black) to 1 (white). This is the dimension that decides whether a liner reads as natural or as product. Lip liners in this catalog run from about 0.10 to 0.88.

The MLBB offset. The gap between your natural lip lightness and the liner that will look like a better version of it. Measured across the catalog, useful liners sit roughly 0.05 to 0.10 below the natural lip value. Below about 0.15 the liner stops reading as your lip and starts reading as a lip liner.

Undertone. Whether the colour leans blue (cool) or gold (warm) underneath. Cool seasons want the blue-based version of their depth band; warm seasons want the gold-based one. Undertone decides whether a correct-depth liner looks flattering or slightly grey.

Find your band, then your undertone

Two steps. First, identify your natural lip depth from the five bands below — look at the middle of your lower lip in daylight, without product, since the edges are always deeper. Then pick the undertone column that matches your season.

The bands below are computed from 1040 lip liners across 56 brands, sorted by measured lightness rather than by shade name.

Barely-there lips — the natural colour is close to the surrounding skin. 192 liners in the catalog sit in this band. If this is your natural depth, the liners below sit at or just under it — close enough to read as your own lip, defined enough to show.

Frequently asked questions

What does MLBB actually mean?

MLBB stands for "my lips but better" — a lip product close enough to your natural lip colour that it reads as your own mouth on a good day rather than as makeup. The universal advice is to go one or two shades deeper than your natural lip, which is unhelpful because nobody defines what a shade is. Measured in lightness, the useful version is roughly 0.05 to 0.10 darker than your natural lip value.

How do I find my natural lip colour?

Look at your lower lip in daylight without any product on it, in the middle rather than at the edges where it is usually deeper. The most reliable way is to photograph it and read the colour value, because the eye is poor at judging depth in isolation. The TruHue app does this from a photo and returns the hex.

Should a lip liner match my lipstick or my lips?

Your lips, if you want a natural result. Matching the lipstick is a deliberately visible technique and it dates quickly. Matching slightly deeper than your natural lip gives definition that survives the lipstick wearing off, which is the entire practical argument for wearing liner at all.

What is the difference between nude and MLBB?

A nude is defined against skin; MLBB is defined against your lips. That is why so many nudes look wrong — a nude built for someone whose lips are two bands lighter than yours will read as grey or ashy on you, and one built for deeper lips will read as muddy.

Does my colour season matter for lip liner?

It decides undertone, not depth. Depth is set by your natural lip; season tells you whether to take the cool version of that depth or the warm one. Getting depth right and undertone wrong looks slightly off. Getting depth wrong looks like makeup.
