Brow shade names are meaningless: what taupe and ash brown actually are

The problem with brow shade names

Every brow range uses the same handful of words: taupe, ash brown, soft brown, medium brown, dark brown, blonde. Those words imply a standard. There isn't one.

Here is what happens when you take every brow product in the catalog with a measured swatch hex and group them by the word on the packaging.

Read the third column. Forty-one different colours are being sold as “taupe.” Forty-four as “soft brown.” Thirty-eight as “dark brown” — and the lightness column shows those dark browns running from 0.06, which is essentially black, to 0.64, which is a mid-tone. Two products with identical labels can be further apart than two products with opposite labels.

This is why buying a brow pencil online by name fails so often, and why the advice to “go for taupe if you're cool-toned” is unactionable. Taupe is not a colour. It is a mood.

Since the labels won't do it, here are the actual definitions, in terms you can measure.

How to actually choose

Two steps, in this order.

First, match depth to your hair. If your hair is dark, go one to two shades lighter than it — brow product fills a denser-looking area than head hair, so an exact match reads heavy. If your hair is light or blonde, go one to two shades darker, because an exact match disappears. This step has nothing to do with your colour season.

Second, match undertone to your season. This is where season matters, and it is the only place it does. Cool seasons — the Summers and the Winters — want ash. Warm seasons — the Springs and the Autumns — want golden or auburn. Getting this backwards is what makes brows look slightly muddy or slightly orange without it being obvious why.

Ash browns — for the cool seasons

For Light Summer, True Summer, Soft Summer, Bright Winter, True Winter and Deep Winter. Low saturation, grey-leaning, no gold. Listed light to deep.

Golden browns — for the warm seasons

For Light Spring, True Spring, Bright Spring, Soft Autumn, True Autumn and Deep Autumn. Visible warmth in the 28 to 60 degree hue range. Listed light to deep.

Neutral browns — the safest starting point

If you are unsure of your season, or sit between two, these sit between ash and golden and are the least likely to look obviously wrong.

Auburn — for red and copper hair

The smallest category in the catalog. If your hair is genuinely red rather than warm brown, an ordinary brown brow pencil will look grey against it.

Checking the actual swatch colour is more reliable than the name.

Should my brows match my hair colour exactly?
