ILIA's flagship skin tint has TWO rating-5 ingredients. Kosas: 0% clean. Tower 28: four flags in one concealer.
You switched to clean beauty because the marketing told you it was safer. No parabens. No sulfates. No synthetic fragrance. The implication was clear: these products are gentler on your skin.
But "clean" is a marketing category, not a dermatological one. It describes what a formula excludes — parabens, certain preservatives, synthetic fragrance. It says absolutely nothing about whether a formula contains pore-clogging ingredients.
TruHue scanned the flagship products from four of the most popular clean beauty brands. The results aren't what their marketing suggests.
ILIA Super Serum Skin Tint: two 5/5 ingredients
ILIA's Super Serum Skin Tint ($48) is the brand's hero product — a skincare-meets-makeup hybrid with SPF 40. Clean at Sephora. Here's what the ingredient audit found:

Take the Free Quiz| Ingredient | Rating | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Isopropyl Isostearate | 5/5 | Emollient ester — highest comedogenic rating |
| Sodium Chloride | 5/5 | Salt-based thickener — highest comedogenic rating |
| Polyglyceryl-3 Diisostearate | 4/5 | Emulsifier |
Two ingredients at the maximum comedogenic rating, plus a third at 4/5. This is one of the worst-scoring products in TruHue's entire database — and it carries a "clean" label at Sephora. The clean certification checked for parabens and sulfates. Nobody checked for pore-clogging esters.

ILIA, Kosas, Tower 28, Glossier: brand by brand
Not sure of your season yet? Take the free color quiz — it takes about 2 minutes.
ILIA Soft Focus Blurring Blush ($32): Octyl Palmitate (4), Lauroyl Lysine (2), Tocopherol (2). Three flags. Even the blush isn't clean by acne standards.
Kosas: 0 out of 10 products passed. Zero percent clean rate. Every product in the line carries at least one comedogenic flag.
Tower 28 Swipe Serum Concealer ($22): Four comedogenic flags in a single product — Polyglyceryl-3 Diisostearate (4), Sorbitan Isostearate (3), Tocopheryl Acetate (3), Isononyl Isononanoate (2). This concealer carries more flags than most conventional drugstore foundations.
Glossier Stretch Foundation ($28): Sorbitan Isostearate (3), Plankton Extract (4), Tocopherol (2). Three flags, including a rating-4 marine extract.
Why "clean" and "acne-safe" answer different questions
"Clean" beauty asks: Does this formula avoid parabens, sulfates, phthalates, and synthetic fragrance?
"Acne-safe" asks: Does this formula contain ingredients that score 2 or higher on the Fulton comedogenic scale?
These are completely separate questions. A product can be clean and comedogenic. A product can contain parabens and be perfectly non-comedogenic. The labels measure different things.
Plant-derived oils, natural esters, and botanical extracts — the building blocks of clean formulation — frequently score high on the comedogenic scale. Isopropyl Isostearate is derived from vegetable oil. Ascophyllum Nodosum is seaweed. Natural origin doesn't equal pore-safe.
What actually works for acne-prone skin
Skip the brand labels. Check the ingredient list. TruHue's 856-ingredient comedogenic database flags every product at every price point — clean or conventional, luxury or drugstore.
Some genuinely clean options that also passed the acne audit:
| Product | Price | Status |
|---|---|---|
| RMS Beauty Un Cover-up | $50 | CLEAN (acne-safe + clean beauty) |
| bareMinerals Original Foundation | $30 | CLEAN |
| Maybelline Fit Me Matte + Poreless | $9 | CLEAN (conventional, not "clean" — but acne-safe) |
RMS Beauty has the highest clean rate in TruHue's database at 60%. Not all clean brands are equal — and the ones that are acne-safe usually aren't the ones with the biggest marketing budgets.
